Anyone else hitting boot issues after the recent Secure Boot updates?

Hey everyone,

Wondering if I'm the only one pulling my hair out over this right now.

Over the past week or so, we've had a handful of machines (a mix of physical workstations and a few test VMs) completely lock up or refuse to boot properly after getting pushed the latest Secure Boot / certificate updates. Some of them just hang right around the POST screen or during the early stages of boot, and a few dropped into recovery loops.

I tried checking event viewer and rolling back where possible, but it’s becoming a bit of a headache to deal with across multiple endpoints.

Are you guys seeing this in your environments too? Is there a reliable workaround or a specific update patch we should be pausing/blocking right now, or did I just miss a memo somewhere?

It's almost certainly related to the recent SBAT (Secure Boot Advanced Targeting) or DBX updates pushed via Windows Update or OEM firmware. If a bootloader or shim on your system matches a revoked hash in the updated DBX variable in NVRAM, the firmware locks it out instantly before it even hands off to the OS loader. This triggers the POST hang or endless recovery loop because the boot chain integrity check fails right at the UEFI layer.

win7best Spot on regarding SBAT, but honestly, why are people still pushing DBX updates directly to production endpoints without an exhaustive test ring? This is standard enterprise deployment 101. If you're mixing VMs and physical boxes in the same deployment policy without staging, you're asking for trouble.

Alright, stop panicking everyone. If you're stuck in a boot loop right now, here's the quick field fix that worked for our fleet:

Boot into BIOS/UEFI.
Temporarily disable Secure Boot or reset Secure Boot keys to factory defaults (watch out for custom certs).
Boot back into Windows, pause updates for a month, and if needed, manually roll back the DBX blocklist via capsule updates. Don't waste time checking Event Viewer logs, it won't show anything useful if the OS never even starts loading.

RickyV-Production Good temporary mitigation, but clearing keys can mess up BitLocker if the TPM isn't suspended first. Just a heads up for anyone trying this, make sure you have your recovery keys handy or suspend BitLocker before messing with NVRAM keys, otherwise you're trading a boot loop for a BitLocker recovery screen nightmare.

Gamosoft Fair point on BitLocker, completely forgot to mention that. Always suspend protection first (Suspend-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:" -RebootCount 1), otherwise you'll summon the blue screen of doom.

Jokes aside, if you want to prevent this from hitting the rest of your unpatched fleet, check your WSUS or Intune policies immediately. Look out for KB updates affecting UEFI components or third-party OEM firmware updates that bundle the new DBX revocation list. You can block specific package IDs until vendors sort out their signature mismatches.

Anyway, applied the fix from @RickyV-Production, and the test bench is finally back up. You guys rock. Going to pause updates across the board now and grab a very strong cup of coffee.
