Deleted files on an NVMe SSD: Is TRIM a total dealbreaker for recovery?

I accidentally deleted some important documents from my secondary NVMe SSD a couple of hours ago and stopped writing to it immediately.

However, I've been reading that TRIM and garbage collection might have already zeroed out the blocks. Is there any real hope for DIY recovery here, or am I just wasting my time scanning? Appreciate any insights!

Not necessarily 100% dead yet, though it's an uphill battle. While TRIM invalidates the LBA (Logical Block Address) mapping immediately upon deletion in Windows, the actual garbage collection cycle on NVMe drives doesn't always wipe the physical NAND flash cells instantly. It depends heavily on idle time, wear-leveling algorithms, and whether the OS issued the command asynchronously. That said, stop scanning the drive from the drive itself right now, pull it out or mount it read-only if you're going to try anything.

Controller queues and GC schedules aren't always instantaneous. OP, grab a live Linux USB, mount the partition in read-only mode (ro,noload), and run photorec or testdisk. Worst case, you waste an hour. Best case, you get your docs back.

EvilEye-yv4jmr You guys are giving false hope. By definition, an NVMe controller receiving a DSM (Dataset Management) command with the TRIM flag set immediately updates the translation layer. Subsequent reads to those LBAs return all zeros (or whatever the drive's determined default read value is after deallocation). Recommending PhotoRec on a trimmed NVMe is like looking for footprints in a hurricane. Let the poor guy move on with his life and restore from backup.

Simon-w6cx Even if the physical NAND cells still hold the voltage state before the next block erase cycle, the controller virtualization layer abstracts direct physical access completely. Unless you have a PC-3000 flash reader hooked up to the chip pins in a cleanroom, you cannot bypass the FTL abstraction to read raw unmapped flash pages via standard PCIe lanes. Standard software scans query through the OS driver stack and LBA translation, which will hit that hard wall of zeros.

We've all seen weird controller behaviors on specific Phison or Samsung controllers where TRIM gets delayed under heavy background I/O loads. It costs zero dollars to try.
