DiskPart made my external hard drive disappear from File Explorer? Help!

Guys, I think I just ruined everything.

I was trying to format a bootable USB drive using DiskPart in Command Prompt, but I think I selected the wrong disk. I ran select disk 2 and then hit clean. Half a second later, my heart dropped—I realized DiskPart was pointing at my 2TB WD My Passport external hard drive where I store ALL my family photos, tax documents, and 10 years of personal projects.

Now, the drive doesn't show up in File Explorer at all. Windows makes the plug-in sound when I connect it, but nothing appears. I checked Disk Management, and it shows the space as "Unallocated".

I HAVEN'T written anything else to it! Did I just erase all my data forever? Is there any way to undo a DiskPart clean command?

Take a deep breath. Your data is likely 99% intact.

When you run the standard clean command in DiskPart (without the all parameter), Windows does not erase your actual data bytes or overwrite the sectors. It merely wipes the Master Boot Record (MBR) or GUID Partition Table (GPT), including the partition table entries and the file system headers. Think of it as tearing off the table of contents from a 1,000-page book—the actual chapters are still sitting right there on the magnetic platters.

As long as you do NOT create a new partition, format it, or run clean all (which writes zeros to every sector), your raw data remains untouched.

xdea Spot on about the theory. Now let's fix OP's drive before they pass out. OP, stop touching DiskPart and don't touch Disk Management either.

Here is the 5-minute fix:

Download a free tool called TestDisk (it's open-source, CLI-based, looks ugly but works like magic).

Run it as Admin, select your external disk (check the capacity to make sure it's the 2TB drive!).

Select partition type (Intel for MBR or EFI GPT depending on how it was formatted).

Run Analyse -> Quick Search.

TestDisk will scan for leftover partition headers. Once it finds your lost partition, press P to list files and confirm your photos are there.

If everything looks good, choose Write to rewrite the partition table back to the disk, then reboot.

Your drive will instantly pop back up in File Explorer.

If OP misidentifies the original partition parameters (e.g., mixing up MBR and GPT or selecting the wrong offsets), writing a corrupted partition table directly to the raw drive will make future recovery significantly harder.

Rule Zero of Data Recovery: Always create a disk image first using dd (or DDRescue / Win32 Disk Imager) onto a separate healthy drive. Work ONLY on the image file or clone. Never experiment on the original damaged drive.

He ran clean in CMD, not rm -rf / on a prod server. The guy is one step away from crying himself to sleep, don't scare him into thinking he needs a CS degree to restore a partition block.

If OP is too scared to write the partition table using TestDisk, there's a middle-ground GUI alternative: DMDE (DM Disk Editor).

Run DMDE -> Select Physical Drive -> Look at the partitions list. It will usually show the deleted NTFS/exFAT partition with a green indicator in 3 seconds. You can literally right-click -> "Insert / Restore Partition", hit Apply, and you're done. No command line required.

gcyz Correct. clean zero-fills only the MBR/GPT sectors and hidden sector information (takes 1 second).

clean all writes zeroes to every single sector on the drive. For a 2TB external hard drive over USB 3.0, clean all would take 4 to 6 hours to complete, and THAT would render standard software recovery completely impossible because every byte is overwritten with 0x00. Since OP's command finished instantly, they only ran clean.

Size: Match the volume size (e.g., ~1862 GB for a 2TB drive).

File System: It will say NTFS or exFAT (avoid RAW or unknown).

Volume Label: TestDisk/DMDE will usually show the original name of your drive (e.g., "MyPassport" or "Backup").

In DMDE, you can double-click the candidate partition to preview the directory tree before doing any restore. If you see your folders, that's the winner.

Everything said above about recovery applies strictly to traditional HDDs (SMR/PMR spinny drives). If someone makes this mistake on an NVMe/SATA SSD, the OS sends a TRIM command upon partition deletion. Once TRIM executes, the drive's controller garbage-collects those sectors, returning zeroes instantly even if clean was used. Software recovery on a TRIMmed SSD is near 0%.

OP got lucky because their 2TB WD My Passport is an HDD.

I followed #2's advice with TestDisk (was too terrified to wait, sorry #3!). It scanned the drive, found my original NTFS partition named "MY_BACKUP", I hit Write, restarted my PC, and File Explorer just picked it up like nothing ever happened! ALL MY PHOTOS ARE THERE!
