External Hard Drive Keeps Disconnecting and Reconnecting on Windows

My external HDD keeps disconnecting and reconnecting randomly while I'm using it. Windows sometimes makes the USB disconnect sound, then the drive appears again a few seconds later. I've tried different USB ports, but the problem still happens. What could be causing this?

ProcessDriven The first thing I'd separate here is the USB connection from the drive itself.

If Windows is actually playing the USB disconnect/reconnect sound, the device is probably dropping off the USB bus rather than simply becoming inaccessible in File Explorer.

Common causes are:

A bad or loose USB cable

Insufficient or unstable power

USB selective suspend/power management

A flaky USB port or hub

Problems with the USB-to-SATA bridge inside the enclosure

The HDD itself starting to fail

I'd start with the cable and power side before changing Windows settings. Hardware problems tend to produce exactly this kind of intermittent behavior.

LeoF_225 +1 on testing the cable first. USB 3.x cables can look perfectly fine while having an intermittent connection.

I'd do a very simple isolation test:

Plug the drive directly into a rear motherboard USB port if you're on a desktop.

Don't use a USB hub or front-panel extension.

Try another known-good cable.

If it's a portable 2.5" HDD powered entirely over USB, try another computer.

If it still disconnects on another computer with another cable, I'd stop blaming Windows. At that point the enclosure or the drive becomes much more suspicious.

Also, if there's important data on it, I'd copy that data somewhere else before doing a bunch of stress tests.

desktopfan One small distinction: "different USB ports" doesn't completely rule out a USB power issue.

Two ports can be connected through the same host controller or internal power path, and a bus-powered mechanical HDD has a much higher startup/current demand than a flash drive.

Also, Device Manager showing the disk doesn't prove the physical link is healthy. I'd check Event Viewer around the exact time of a disconnect for Disk, Ntfs, Kernel-PnP, or USB-related events.

The exact error matters. "The disk disappeared" and "the USB device was reset" point toward different layers of the stack.

GuessIllWait USB troubleshooting is basically:

"Have you tried another cable?"

"Yes."

"Another port?"

"Yes."

"Another computer?"

"Yes."

"Have you sacrificed a goat to the USB controller?"

Jokes aside, the cable/enclosure test is genuinely useful here. If the drive works perfectly on another PC, then we can stop treating the HDD as guilty until proven innocent.

And please don't start formatting it just because Windows is being dramatic. That won't fix a flaky physical connection.

hardwareguy82 Following this because I'm having something similar.

One thing I noticed with mine: it doesn't disconnect immediately after plugging it in. It can run normally for 20–30 minutes and then suddenly disappear.

So I'm curious whether the timing matters. If it happens mostly during large file transfers, I'd probably suspect power, cable, enclosure, or the drive itself before Windows settings.

scott1984 I checked a bit more after reading these replies.

It seems to happen more often when I'm copying a lot of files. I also realized I'm using the original USB cable, but the drive is several years old.

I haven't tried another computer yet. I'll test that before changing any Windows settings.

If you have important files on the drive, I'd prioritize copying the most important stuff first rather than repeatedly reconnecting it and running diagnostics.

Also, if this is a desktop external HDD with its own power adapter, check that connection too. If it's a portable USB-powered HDD, power delivery becomes more relevant.

One useful test is to watch whether the drive disconnects during a large sequential copy on another PC. If it does the exact same thing there, you've got a pretty strong hardware-side clue.
