Is partitioning a 2TB SSD still worth it, or just a headache?

I’m setting up a new PC with a single 2TB M.2 SSD. Out of habit, my instinct is to split it into C: (System) and D: (Data/Games), mostly so I can wipe Windows without losing everything if the OS gets corrupted.

However, a friend mentioned that with modern SSDs, partitioning just wastes usable space (like running out of room on C: while D: has 500GB free) and that running disk tools to resize partitions later is a risk I don't need to take.

For anyone who's dealt with this: what’s your real-world setup? Is single-drive partitioning a relic of the HDD days, or is there still a legit safety reason to do it?

Back in the HDD era, we partitioned to keep the OS on the outer tracks for speed and to make formatting fast. On modern NVMe SSDs, wear leveling and controller wear-management happen at the physical flash controller level regardless of logical partitions. You aren't saving your SSD's hardware life by splitting it.

As for the "wipe Windows without losing data" argument: games installed on D: usually still leave appdata, registry keys, and save files on C: unless you manually remap user folders. When you nuke C:, half your games on D: break or lose their saves anyway.

Just keep one big volume, buy a cheap external drive or cloud storage for actual backups, and stop micromanaging sectors like it’s 2008.

That’s user error, not a fundamental flaw of logical separation.

If you set up your user profile folders properly using environment variables or symbolic links (mklink /D), your save states and configuration files stay intact on the secondary volume across clean OS installs. Windows Media Creation Tool doesn't care about your secondary volume when you reimage C:.

Is it necessary for performance? No. Is it clean architecture? Absolutely. Keeping system binaries isolated from massive steam libraries is basic system administration hygiene.
