Hey guys, my 1TB Samsung T7 suddenly threw an I/O error and Disk Management shows it as "RAW" with all format options grayed out.

Someone on YouTube said the only way out is opening cmd as Admin and running `diskpart -> clean -> convert gpt`. But I've also heard horror stories of people wiping their OS drive by mistake. What does `clean` actually do under the hood, and what's the exact safe sequence to revive this drive without bricking my PC?

`clean` doesn't actually zero out every single block on the NAND flash. What it does is issue an IOCTL that zeroes out the partition configuration data—specifically the Master Boot Record (MBR) or GUID Partition Table (GPT) structures located at the initial logical block addresses (LBA 0 and LBA 1).

When Windows flags a volume as RAW, it usually means the file system metadata (e.g., the MFT in NTFS or the superblock in ext4) or partition header is corrupted. `clean` simply strips that broken metadata so Windows treats the physical drive as completely uninitialized unallocated space, allowing you to rewrite a fresh partition table without filesystem lock conflicts.

In UEFI/GPT specifications, LBA 0 is the Protective MBR for legacy BIOS compatibility. LBA 1 contains the Primary GPT Header, followed by LBA 2–33 containing the Partition Entries. Furthermore, `diskpart clean` also overwrites the Backup GPT located at the very last 33 sectors of the physical disk (LBA_max). If it didn't clear the backup table at the end of the drive, Windows would just reconstruct the partition layout on the next boot cycle. Precision matters.

Golden Rule #1: Unplug every single USB flash drive, external HDD, and SD card except the broken one.

Now open CMD as Admin and type these exact lines:

1. diskpart

2. list disk (Look at the "Size" column. If your SSD is 1TB, look for ~931 GB. Note the number X.)

3. select disk X (Double check the number!)

4. detail disk (Sanity check: make sure the device name matches your Samsung SSD.)

5. clean

6. convert gpt

7. create partition primary

8. format fs=ntfs quick (or fs=exfat quick if you use it on Mac too)

9. assign

10. exit

Done in 30 seconds.

Or better yet, stop using legacy tools and just do it in modern PowerShell:

Standard `clean` ONLY wipes the partition table headers! Any script kiddie with TestDisk, PhotoRec, or Recuva can rebuild that partition table and recover 100% of the raw data underneath. If that drive had personal documents, tax files, or browser profiles, you MUST run `clean all` to write zeros across every physical sector.

1. Writing zeros across an entire NAND drive wastes precious P/E (Program/Erase) endurance cycles for no benefit.

2. Due to the SSD controller's Flash Translation Layer (FTL), Wear Leveling, and Over-Provisioning, software zero-filling does not reliably sanitize retired NAND blocks anyway.

If OP actually wants cryptographic erasure on an SSD, they should use the Samsung Magician tool to issue a hardware ATA/NVMe Secure Erase (or invoke an NVMe Crypto Scramble via `sanitize`), which instructs the controller to drop the encryption key and clear the NAND blocks at the voltage layer. For just fixing a RAW filesystem, standard `clean` is all that is required.

Followed u/OldSchoolSysAdmin's sequence step-by-step (checked the disk number 4 times just to be safe). Did `clean` -> `convert gpt` -> `format fs=ntfs quick` -> `assign`.

Took less than 15 seconds. Drive popped right back up in File Explorer as `D:` with all 931 GB free and writable!
