Cloned my Windows SSD to a larger drive, but the extra space is missing.

I cloned my 500GB Windows SSD to a 2TB SSD, and Windows boots normally from the new drive. But the main partition is still around 500GB, so the remaining space shows as unallocated. Do I need to resize the partition after cloning, or did I miss something during the cloning process?

mike_t_ If Disk Management is showing the rest as Unallocated, then the clone itself probably worked fine. You basically copied the old 500GB partition layout onto the 2TB drive.

Right-click the Windows partition and see if Extend Volume is available. If it is, you can extend it into the unallocated space. No need to clone again.

fixeditonce Yep. A clone doesn't automatically mean "make the partitions bigger."

Think of it as copying the partition map along with the data. If the source had a 500GB C: partition, the target can end up with a 500GB C: partition + ~1.5TB unallocated.

The important part is where that unallocated space sits relative to C:.

LeoF_225 One small correction: don't assume the unallocated space is necessarily usable by C: just because it's on the same disk.

In Disk Management, C: needs to have the unallocated space immediately to its right for the built-in Extend Volume option to work.

If there's a Recovery partition sitting between C: and the unallocated space, Disk Management won't move it for you.

windowsxpvet I checked Disk Management. There is a small Recovery partition after C:, then the big unallocated area.

So yeah, Extend Volume is greyed out. I was wondering why Windows wouldn't just let me use the extra space.

Windows Disk Management can extend a partition, but it can't simply pick up that Recovery partition and move it out of the way.

You have two reasonable options:

Leave C: at 500GB and create a separate volume from the unallocated space.

Use a partition manager that can move the Recovery partition and then extend C:.

I'd go with #2 if your goal is to have one large C: drive.
