Cloning 1TB HDD (250GB used) to a 500GB SSD, best painless way?

Hey guys, finally moving Windows to a new 500GB NVMe SSD. My current 1TB HDD only has ~250GB of data on it, but I really want to avoid a clean install.

Can I just shrink the main partition first and then clone it with Macrium / Rescuezilla?

Also, any free tools you'd recommend now that Macrium changed its free tier? Thanks!

hyeonkyoo Yes, you can absolutely do this without a clean install. Here is the exact zero-cost workflow I use for clients every week:

Clean up first: Run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr), purge temporary files, and empty the Recycle Bin. No point in cloning trash.
Defrag: Since it's a mechanical HDD, run a quick defrag so Disk Management actually lets you shrink the volume.
Shrink C: drive: Go to diskmgmt.msc, right-click C:, and shrink it so the total allocated space on the HDD is well under 400GB (gives you a safety buffer for the 500GB SSD).
Clone with Clonezilla or Rescuezilla: Boot into a Rescuezilla USB. It has a graphical UI, detects the source and target automatically, and handles partition resizing gracefully.

Takes about 40 minutes over SATA/NVMe. Just make sure you select the correct target drive so you don't overwrite your HDD.
