Help!! Stuck in a loop while installing Windows??

Hey guys, I’m trying to do a clean install on my old laptop. I followed a YouTube tutorial, made a bootable USB and everything. The installation finished and said it needed to restart... but every time it restarts, it just goes back to the "Install Now" screen again!!

Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to click "Install" a second time? I don’t want to break my computer, please help!

Lilly Bro, just pull the flash drive out. When it hits that 10-second restart countdown and the screen goes black, just yank the USB out of the port. It'll boot from your hard drive naturally and finish the setup.

svykseler To add some technical context to what you said: Windows installation actually happens in two distinct phases. Phase 1 (running from your USB) simply copies the core Windows image (install.wim) to your local SSD. Phase 2 does the actual hardware configuration. Because your BIOS is currently set to boot from the USB as priority, your laptop just keeps booting back into Phase 1. Removing the drive forces it to fall back to your internal drive to start Phase 2.

svykseler This is terrible advice and awful practice. You shouldn't be "yanking" live bootable media. The correct and documented way is to enter the UEFI firmware settings, change the boot priority order so the Windows Boot Manager (or NVMe drive) is #1, and then reboot. Brute-forcing hardware like a caveman is exactly why people corrupt their partitions.

Wait, you can literally just rip the USB out? I always thought pulling a drive without safely ejecting in software would corrupt it. Taking notes for my own build next week.

RosalindEverly-n4h Absolute BS. The WinPE environment completely unmounts the install.wim and flushes the disk cache before sending the ACPI reset signal to the motherboard. The USB is essentially inactive during the POST screen. Yanking it is 100% safe and saves this poor guy 15 minutes of fumbling around in a 90s-looking BIOS screen. I’ve built hundreds of rigs doing exactly this.

However, the absolute best practice to avoid this entirely: Leave your internal drive as #1 in the BIOS permanently, and use the Motherboard's One-Time Boot Menu (usually hitting F12, F8, or F11 on startup) to select the USB just once. That way, when the PC reboots, it naturally goes straight to the hard drive without any physical pulling or BIOS rearranging.

The hardest part of installing Windows shouldn't be convincing your laptop you already installed it.

Exactly. Whether you pull the drive when the screen goes black as I do, or use the F12 boot menu as @GysGs-t9cc suggested, the goal is just to let the PC boot from the hard drive on that first restart. Once you see the Windows logo with the spinning dots and it says "Getting devices ready," you're completely in the clear. Just grab a coffee and let the setup finish.
