Is it safe to clone a drive with a storage spaces virtual disk attached?

My workstation has a normal Windows system SSD plus a Storage Spaces pool used for media files. I only want to clone the system SSD, but I'm worried the cloning software might copy references to the Storage Spaces metadata or confuse drive signatures. Has anyone cloned a boot drive while keeping Storage Spaces connected? Did the cloned system recognize the pool normally afterward?

I had almost the exact setup and honestly I was terrified of touching it. Last time I cloned a system drive, Windows wouldn't boot and I spent the whole weekend recovering files. Storage Spaces metadata is stored on the member disks of the pool rather than on the system SSD itself.

Assuming you're cloning only the boot drive:

Pool metadata should remain untouched.

The cloned OS will rediscover the storage pool during device enumeration.

The primary risk is duplicate disk signatures if both source and target SSD remain connected during first boot.

I wouldn't worry too much. Before cloning, run:

Get-StoragePool

Get-VirtualDisk

Get-PhysicalDisk

After booting the clone, run the same commands again.

If the pool status is Healthy before and after, you're done. Personally I've cloned Windows drives with Storage Spaces attached several times. Never had an issue. No need for ten different GUI tools to tell you what PowerShell already knows.

Clone only the SSD. When it's finished, power off the machine and unplug the old system drive before the first boot. Let Windows start from the cloned SSD alone.

If Storage Spaces shows up in File Explorer and you can access your media, you're good. Most problems come from leaving both Windows drives connected and confusing the boot process.

Which cloning software?

Some tools preserve disk IDs, some regenerate them, and some modify boot records automatically. Storage Spaces metadata itself isn't the issue. The handling of disk signatures is.

Without knowing the software, nobody can honestly guarantee the result.

I tried this last year and thought everything went perfectly.

Turns out Windows booted from the old SSD even though I thought I was testing the clone. I spent hours validating the wrong installation. The Storage Spaces pool actually worked fine the entire time.

So yes, the pool will probably survive. Just make sure you're actually booting from the cloned drive.

The Storage Spaces part wouldn't worry me.

The cloning software would.

Some of these migration tools collect hardware information, system logs, and usage telemetry. If you're handling sensitive data, I'd disconnect networking during the clone and only reconnect after everything is finished.

As for the pool, it should still be recognized normally because the metadata stays on the Storage Spaces disks.

Honestly, your media pool is probably safer than your Windows installation. The real danger is ending up with two identical SSDs and spending three hours trying to figure out which one you're booting from.

The short answer is yes.

Storage Spaces metadata resides on the pool member disks, so cloning only the Windows SSD normally does not affect pool recognition.

The safest procedure is:

Clone only the system SSD.

Shut down completely.

Disconnect the original SSD.

Boot from the clone.

Verify Storage Spaces health.

Reconnect the old drive only after confirming everything works.

We've used this approach repeatedly in migration scenarios without affecting existing storage pools.

A lot of people keep repeating that Storage Spaces and the system disk are completely independent. That's an oversimplification. Windows stores mount point information, drive letter assignments, and some storage configuration data in the OS. The pool metadata may survive, but that doesn't automatically mean your environment is restored exactly as before. Those are two different questions.

Before worrying about Storage Spaces, check whether your cloning software creates temporary image files. Some programs leave huge backup archives on secondary drives without making it obvious. If your media pool contains private documents or client data, verify exactly where the clone process stores its working files.
