How to recover deleted photos on external HDD with original folder structure?

I was organizing multiple external hard drives filled with years of family photos (it's a massive mess), and I accidentally deleted the entire contents of one drive.

Luckily, I caught myself immediately: the drive was not formatted, and I haven't done anything to it since.

Is there a way to recover everything while keeping the exact same file names and folder structure? It would be a total nightmare to sort through thousands of recovered photos if they lose their original names and organization. Would love some recommendations on the most reliable software for this. gutuvignldas0547 Take a deep breath, you're mostly fine. Your data is almost certainly 100% intact. When you "delete" a folder in NTFS or exFAT, the OS doesn't actually wipe the sectors. It just marks that space in the File Allocation Table or Master File Table (MFT) as "free real estate" and drops the pointers. Since you unplugged it instantly, the actual data clusters containing your images, and more importantly, the metadata defining your folder structure, are still sitting there untouched. As long as the OS hasn't overwritten those specific index blocks, a deep index scan will stitch the whole tree back together perfectly.

The good news is you didn't do the ultimate stupid thing: downloading a recovery tool onto the same drive and overwriting your own wedding photos with a 50MB installer. PurityIsigu ^^ Spot on. First rule of data recovery: Don't touch anything, and do NOT write new data to that drive. Since you didn't format it, your chances are damn near 100%. Skip the cheap "one-click" crap you see on Google ads; they usually fail at keeping folders and just vomit raw files into a single directory. Look into R-Studio or GetDataBack. They are absolute beasts at rebuilding MFT structures. Just make sure you have another empty drive ready to dump the recovered files onto. Never recover files back onto the same drive.

DIPO7974 Recommending R-Studio straight out of the gate to someone who is clearly panicking is wild. R-Studio's UI looks like it was built in 1998 for forensic analysts. If OP misconfigures a single setting during the scan, they risk butchering the interpretation of the filesystem remnants. Also, we don't even know what filesystem the external drive is. If it's exFAT (super common for cross-platform external drives), folder structure recovery is way more fragile after a deletion compared to NTFS because exFAT doesn't keep a robust backup of directory indices. We need details before shouting product names.

SirTurtle Fair point on exFAT architecture, the lack of a transaction log does make it messy. However, assuming this was a standard deletion of a parent directory root rather than a full format or structural crash, the cluster chain pointers for the subdirectories should still sit sequentially in the allocation bitmap. A signature-independent scan of the root directory remnants will easily map out the sub-folders. The clunky UI obstacle of pro tools is easily cleared with a basic tutorial, and it's still way safer than relying on consumer-grade garbage.

SirTurtle Look, I get the fundamentalist approach, but when someone is crying over family photos, they need practical fixes, not a lecture on cluster chains. Yes, R-Studio is complicated, which is why I also mentioned GetDataBack, which is way more user-friendly. Another solid choice is DMDE (Disk Editor). It's insanely powerful, cheap, and if the MFT is healthy, its "Pure Virtual File System" will show you the exact folder tree in literally 30 seconds before you even pay for a license.

DIPO7974 "DMDE is easy." Sure, if your idea of a fun weekend is staring at a hexadecimal partition table trying to figure out if your boot sector is aligned. Telling a panicking guy to use a disk editor is like handing a scalpel to someone who just asked for a band-aid. One wrong click in DMDE's advanced partition tools and those family photos are gone. Forever.

Here’s your game plan: Download the trial version of GetDataBack for NTFS or UFS Explorer (install it on your main PC's C: drive, obviously). Plug in your empty 5TB drive, then plug in the 4TB casualty. Run a standard scan. It will scan the MFT records and show you a preview of the folder tree. If the structure looks right in the preview, buy the license and copy the data over to the 5TB.

DIPO7974 You are still playing fast and loose with someone else's data. You forgot the gold standard protocol: Making a bit-stream image first. OP, do NOT scan the live physical drive. If that external drive has any underlying bad sectors you didn't know about, the heavy stress of a full recovery scan can trigger a mechanical failure right there on your desk. Use a tool to clone the 4TB drive into a raw .img file on your 5TB drive first, then scan the image file.

The real horror story begins when OP waits 6 hours for the scan, sees all their beautiful, perfectly organized family photos in the preview, clicks 'Recover', and a massive paywall pops up demanding $80. But honestly, 80 bucks to fix a multi-terabyte screw-up is cheaper than a divorce when your spouse finds out you deleted 10 years of holiday memories. Pay the data tax, OP.

Heartss001 Recuva is an absolute toy. It relies too heavily on basic OS indexing. Once that's broken, it fails miserably at keeping directory trees, and you end up with 50,000 files named unnamed_001.jpg in one flat folder.

He is technically right that imaging is the safest professional method, but if your drive was healthy and didn't suffer a physical drop, running a read-only scan directly on it carries a very low risk. However, to be safe, download CrystalDiskInfo first (it's free). Check the SMART health status of the 4TB drive. If the status says "GOOD" and the values for Current Pending Sector Count are zero, you are perfectly fine to scan it directly.
