Windows: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". Is my data gone?

I plugged my external HDD into my Windows 11 PC today, and instead of opening it, I got the error: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." The drive still appears in File Explorer, but I can't access any files. I really don't want to format it because it contains important photos and work documents. Has anyone recovered from this error without losing data? What should I try first?

UrbanCircuit That specific error usually means Windows can't properly read the file system metadata anymore. It doesn't automatically mean your files are gone.

I've seen this happen because of:

NTFS corruption after an improper shutdown.

A failing USB cable or enclosure.

Bad sectors starting to appear.

Disconnecting an external drive while it was still writing data.

I'd avoid copying random "fixes" from YouTube until you know whether the drive itself is healthy.

UrbanCircuit Had almost the exact same thing on an external SSD.

First thing I did was check SMART health with CrystalDiskInfo. Luckily it showed "Good." After that I ran chkdsk /f, let it finish overnight, and everything came back.

If the drive is clicking or disappearing randomly though, I wouldn't even run CHKDSK first.

"Everything is fine."

"Actually your directory no longer exists."

No in-between. 😂

Seriously though, don't format it just because Windows offers to.

UrbanCircuit Following because I got this message last year after unplugging a portable HDD without ejecting it.

Mine eventually worked after repairing the drive, but it definitely scared me.

benj94 Small correction here.

Running CHKDSK immediately isn't always the safest advice.

If the disk is physically failing, CHKDSK modifies filesystem metadata. That's fine for logical corruption, but it can make later recovery harder if the hardware is dying.

Health check first, repair second.

People often mix up file system corruption with hardware failure.

One affects how Windows interprets the data.

The other affects whether the data can even be read.

The recovery approach is pretty different depending on which one you're dealing with.
