ACCIDENTALLY DELETED MY FINAL THESIS FOLDER! Not in Recycle Bin! Please help 😭

Guys please help, I'm an absolute idiot with computers. I was cleaning up my desktop and accidentally hit Shift+Delete on my main project folder (Thesis_Final_v2). It's NOT in my Recycle Bin! Is it gone forever?? I haven't turned off my PC yet because I'm terrified to touch anything. Is there ANY way to get it back?

Mathews_ Don't panic. When you delete a file, even via Shift+Delete, the OS doesn't immediately erase the physical data bits on the drive. It simply marks those sectors in the File Allocation Table / MFT as "unallocated" and deletes the file pointer. The actual binary data remains intact until new data overwrites those sectors. Rule #1: Do not install or save anything on that drive right now.

That explanation is completely oversimplified if OP is using a modern NVMe SSD. If TRIM is enabled on Windows 10/11, the OS issues a DATA SET MANAGEMENT command to the SSD controller, triggering background Garbage Collection to zero out block addresses almost immediately. Your logic only applies strictly to legacy magnetic HDDs or un-TRIMmed volumes. OP didn't even specify their drive interface.

Kroze_M TRIM execution is queued and subject to controller firmware load, wear-leveling algorithms, and NTFS metadata flush cycles. It is rarely instantaneous for non-aligned cluster blocks under standard desktop IOPS load. Advising an immediate write-freeze is both mathematically and practically sound regardless of medium type.

DracoD Ignore the theoretical nerds arguing semantics. Here is your emergency battle plan:
1. STOP using that laptop immediately. Don't browse, don't download anything on it.
2. Go to another PC, grab a USB thumb drive, and download a portable recovery tool.
3. Plug the USB into your laptop, run the tool directly from the USB, and scan C: drive.
4. Save recovered files to the USB stick, NOT drive C:

Bro be careful recommending raw scan tools like DMDE to noobs... I tried doing that last year for my dog's photos, accidentally clicked the wrong write-mode partition option, and permanently zero-filled my partition table. Lost everything forever. Still hurts.

Mathews_ Local repair shops will charge you $200 just to plug in a USB. Don't waste your money.Just boot into a Linux Live USB, open terminal and run:sudo ddrescue -d -r3 /dev/nvme0n1 p1_backup.img logfile.logThen carve the raw image with photorec. Zero bloat, no GUI overhead, pure control.

DO NOT give your drive to a local repair shop! Techs constantly browse through customer photos and personal files—it's an open secret in IT. Also, don't use random free online recovery tools from Google, half of them are spyware that exfiltrate your metadata to shady foreign servers.
