Why does my CPU usage randomly spike while doing nothing?

Anyone else having this issue?

My laptop fans go crazy and everything lags for a few minutes, then it just stops. Checking Task Manager, it’s always some random system process (usually Search Indexer or update stuff) eating up my CPU.

I’m tired of closing everything just to get it to calm down. Is there a way to actually stop Windows from doing this in the background, or am I stuck with it? Any simple fixes would be a huge help.

Windows is designed to perform telemetry, indexing, and update checks only when it thinks you are "idle" to avoid interrupting your workflow. The problem is, modern background telemetry is aggressive. When the system wakes from a light sleep or thinks you aren't using the mouse, it queues a batch of maintenance. It perceives "doing nothing" as "perfect time to re-index the whole drive."

fabiogiehl2238 If it’s specifically the Search Indexer (SearchProtocolHost.exe) as you said:

Open "Indexing Options" in Control Panel.
Click "Modify."
Uncheck folders you don't need searched (like your massive downloads folder or dev projects). That usually stops the "spinning" for indexing. It saves the CPU from re-crawling terabytes of files for no reason.

fabiogiehl2238 Seriously, just switch to Linux. I installed Arch (btw) and my CPU usage never goes above 1% when I'm idle. Why are you all still torturing yourselves with this bloatware?

Try disabling the "SysMain" service first. It’s supposed to pre-load apps for speed, but on a lot of laptops, it just triggers constant disk/CPU activity for no reason. Press Win+R, type services.msc, find SysMain, stop it, and set it to 'Disabled'. See if that calms the fans down for a day or two.

2006tadeo Disabling SysMain is a band-aid, not a cure. If you want to know what's actually happening, stop killing services blindly. Install Process Lasso or use the built-in Resource Monitor to track I/O latency. It’s usually an indexing loop because of a corrupted file somewhere, not the service itself. Don't break the OS to fix a performance quirk.

The Search Indexer is a low-priority task, but if your disk read speed is low, the CPU waits for the data, causing a "spike" in reported usage. Often, this isn't just Windows being Windows; it's a conflict between your Anti-Virus real-time scanning and the Windows Search crawler. They try to access the same file simultaneously.

First time using a PC? That’s not a bug, that’s a feature. Microsoft loves making sure your laptop sounds like a jet engine right when you’re trying to focus. Good luck fighting the system processes; the registry will probably just revert it on the next update anyway.

2006tadeo Just did this. Excluded my Steam library and Downloads folder. CPU usage in Task Manager dropped from 25% to 3% immediately. You’re a legend, thanks!

2006tadeo Finally, someone gives a surgical solution instead of a sledgehammer. But OP, also check your "Startup Apps." If you have 30 things launching on boot, Windows is trying to index/update those while the search service is already thrashing the disk. Clean that list out first.

2006tadeo Okay, I excluded the folders like you said and my laptop has been quiet for an hour now. It’s actually staying cool. I was worried it was a virus or a hardware failure. Thanks to everyone for the help, really appreciate it.

If the spikes come back after a few days, run sfc /scannow in an admin command prompt—it might just be a corrupt system file causing the indexer to restart the cycle over and over. Keep an eye on it, but don't overthink it. Computers are just machines, they're bound to make a little noise sometimes.
